As part of the activities to mark the legal year in Bayelsa State, Honourable Chief Judge Justice Matilda Abrakasa Ayemieye embarked on a jail delivery exercise. Section 1 of the Criminal Justice Act allows for the release of inmates from custody under special provisions.
She stated that the primary goal of this exercise is to decongest custodial facilities by releasing deserving inmates. “Under my leadership, I am leaving no stone unturned to facilitate and promote the speedy dispensation of justice and fast-track criminal cases.”
Justice Ayemieye emphasized the mutual benefits of the synergy between correctional services and the Bayelsa State judiciary, despite challenges.
Only Ewele Abi was granted freedom, while other inmates had their cases reviewed with bail set at a minimum of 50,000 naira. She assured them that their cases would be addressed promptly.
Controller of the Okaka Correctional Centre, Imoroa F. Hope, expressed appreciation for the medical outreach provided by the Chief Judge, highlighting her nurturing role. He also thanked His Excellency Senator Douye Diri for approving drainage construction at the custodial center and called attention to the need for improved medical facilities.
Deputy Controller Okoka Theophilus noted that the custodial center, established on April 29, 2013, was designed for 300 inmates but currently houses 712.
He highlighted challenges in transporting inmates to court due to a lack of utility vehicles and urged the state government to enhance medical support for inmates.
