EDO Decides:IPC issues emphasizes journalist safety amid political tension

The International Press Centre (IPC) in Lagos, Nigeria, has called on journalists and media professionals assigned to cover the Edo State Governorship election on Saturday, September 21, 2024, to prioritize their safety.
IPC also urged security operatives and other stakeholders involved in the electoral process to ensure the protection of journalists.
IPC Executive Director Mr. Lanre Arogundade emphasized the importance of this call due to the alarming trend of attacks on journalists during elections and the heightened tensions among political actors in the state.
“It is crucial for journalists covering the Edo State election to be safety-conscious while performing their duties and to avoid situations that may endanger them,” he stated. He provided several safety tips for journalists.
According to remain non-partisan avoid moving alone ensure INEC accreditation and carry organizational ID exercise caution when covering violent situations handle sensitive information responsibly.
Mr. Arogundade also urged security agencies to conduct their operations professionally and advised the Inspector General of Police to instruct officers on the ground to protect accredited journalists, recognizing their vital role in ensuring a credible electoral process.
He encouraged other stakeholders, including election observers, to provide journalists with necessary information to facilitate a successful election.
