Journalists have been encouraged to focus on self-development and empowerment through digital skills, knowledge, and the effective use of digital tools for communication and accountability in the media industry.
This call to action was made during a one-day media training organized by National Point, Foreword Communications Limited, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Wole Soyinka Center for Investigative Journalism, held in Ayalla hotels Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
Ms. Ibiba Donpedro, a renowned journalist, emphasized the importance of integrity in journalism. “When I was reporting for The Guardian newspaper, I faced tough decisions as an investigative journalist,” she stated.
“There are risks involved, but
determination is key to achieving your goals. While many seek financial gain, I have never accepted bribes to suppress a story.
Instead, I strive for justice in my profession, which led to my recognition as the Best African Reporter of the Year by CNN in South Africa in 2003, where I had the honor of meeting Nelson Mandela.”
The theme “Local Government Administration in the Niger Delta: Strengthening Accountability and Inclusive Development through Investigations, Data, and Solution Journalism.”
Professor Steve Wordu discussed community development and accountability in local government, stressing that sustainable practices depend on prudent leadership.
He highlighted the crucial role journalists play in society by using digital tools for research while addressing the challenges faced in the profession.
Sunny Dada presented on data-assisted reporting for investigative journalism, explaining how local government funds can be tracked through the offices of the Accountant General and Auditor General, as well as through monthly publications and annual budgets.
He identified key areas for tracking local government expenditures and constituency projects.
Dr. Judex Okoro lectured on investigative reporting tools to enhance accountability, while Chief Constance Meju focused on gender reporting and inclusivity.
