The National Union of Nigeria Welders (NUNIWE) has commended Governor Douye Diri and the Bayelsa state government for their commitment to sustaining the state’s interest in multi-sector infrastructure development.
The commendation was made during the inauguration of unit chairmen of the union, held at Heroes Karaoke Lounge and Bar, Yenegwe, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
Speaking at the event, comrade Pereowei Michael Donyenimigha, chairman of the Gbarain-Ekpetiama Akefa unit, called on the state government to always engage directly with the National Union of Nigeria Welders in matters concerning the welding profession within the state.
According to Comrade Donyenimigha, “as a trade union, we are dedicated to training all who are willing to learn regardless of their background, It is more appropriate for the government to partner with a recognized trade union rather than with private corporate bodies that do not represent the interests of welders.”
He further noted that the union has faced numerous challenges that no other trade union has experienced,even in our host communities, projects are often awarded based on recommendations rather than following due process,” he added.
Comrade Donyenimigha emphasized that by law, a trade union supersedes any association, and therefore, the government should always engage with the trade union directly,he also revealed that the union plans to train 2,000 youths across the eight local government areas of Bayelsa state as part of its empowerment initiative.
“It would greatly promote development and youth empowerment if the government supports this initiative,” he said while other states like Delta have a large number of active welders, we in Bayelsa are still lagging behind.”
Also speaking, comrade Kingsley Prezi, chairman of the Egbemo-Angalabiri/Agbidiama Unit, reflected on the union’s growth and challenges,it has been a long and difficult journey to reach where we are today,uniting our members under a common purpose was not easy, but we have learned who our true allies and colleagues are,” he stated.
He explained that disunity among members had previously led to the creation of parallel associations, lack of documentation, and prolonged tenures of certain chairmen some of whom remained in office for over twenty years thereby affecting the system both at the national and state levels.
“Now that we have inaugurated new leaders and signed a unifying agreement, we are ready to address grievances collectively,politicians should refrain from interference and recommendations that divide the union,unity is the only path to progress,” comrade Prezi added.
In his remarks, Comrade Mozi Bubaratemegha, chairman of the Kolokuma/Opokuma unit, reiterated the union belongs to everyone,as a leader, I will ensure inclusiveness and fairness in all our activities,i urge all members to remain composed and committed to the union’s goals,” he said.
Also present at the event was Comrade Patrick Oyibo Inuma, chairman of the Okordia-Zarama unit, who expressed optimism about the union’s renewed direction and collaboration with the state government.
