Urges continued efforts beyond 16 Days to tackle gender-based violence

A non-governmental organization, women organized for mentorship and advocacy network (WOMAN), has joined the global community in commemorating this year’s 16 days of activism to eliminate gender-based violence (GBV).
The theme for this year’s campaign is “Towards Beijing +30: UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls.” This theme is a focused effort to raise awareness and inspire action to end violence against women and girls, particularly as the world approaches the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in 2025. The Beijing Platform serves as a global blueprint for achieving gender equality and promoting women’s rights.
The 16-day campaign, which begins on November 25, 2024—coinciding with the international day for the elimination of iolence against women—will conclude on december 10, 2024, which marks International Human Rights Day.
Lady Eunice Nnachi, the Executive Director of WOMAN, emphasized that this year’s theme, “Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” is more than just a slogan. It is a powerful call to action for accountability and tangible change.
Lady Nnachi expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of GBV and highlighted that addressing this crisis requires a collective effort. She stressed the need for sustained action beyond the 16 Days of Activism. “It is essential for us to continue supporting every fight against gender-based violence. As stakeholders, we must advocate for stronger policies and allocate resources to both prevent GBV and support survivors,” she said.
She also pointed out that women’s limited access to roles in the public sector perpetuates inequalities and fuels structural violence, serving as a stark reminder of the deep-seated gender inequalities that persist globally.
Lady Nnachi called for a fundamental shift in both policies and societal norms to ensure women have equal access to public institutions and opportunities. She stressed that achieving equality is not only about fairness but also about preventing further entrenchment of gender disparities.
She urged for action over words, accountability over excuses, and resources over empty promises, all in a concerted effort to reduce the scourge of GBV to its barest minimum.
As part of the 16 Days of Activism, WOMAN will also hold community engagement activities in several neighborhoods in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, to further raise awareness and encourage local involvement in addressing gender-based violence.
